What Makes a Bad Boss!
In the past, we’ve written about the
anatomy of a successful business owner, but now it’s time to turn the tables. As a small business owner, it is important that you have a solid team of employees who work hard to keep your business afloat. However, if they are all out to get you because of poor leadership, decision-making or lack of confidence, then your latest business venture will fall flat. So, what makes a horrible boss? Below is our list of traits every small business owner should avoid.
1. Too Threatening – Conducting scare tactics is not the way to go about managing your employees. There is a big difference between authoritative commands and scaring the tar out of someone. Find the right balance, and your employees are sure to respect you as their authority figure.
2. Pessimistic – There is nothing worse than a small business owner who is always expecting the worst. If this is the case, you are likely to end up with it. Do you and your business a favor and look at the bright side of things. Showing confidence and optimism will begin to rub off onto your employees, making your job much easier.
3. Indecisive – Is making decisions your forte? If not, then you may need to rethink your role. A good business owner is not afraid to make decisions – even it is the wrong one. Taking some time to think things through is all right, but don’t hesitate too long. If you do, employees may stop coming to you with ideas or inspiration that may help give your small business the boost it needs.
4. Poor Health – Unfortunately, this is a trait that no one can completely avoid. But if you ever become ill or physically unable to perform the daily tasks of managing your business and its employees, then it is time to throw in the towel (at least indefinitely). Trying to combat health issues with the daily stress and management of tasks at hand will only further decline your health. The best option is to choose a replacement, someone who you believe is able to complete the daily challenges of running the business, until your health recovers.
We understand no one is perfect, and everyone has their own style of management, but it is up to you to see the warning signs. If your employees begin showing up late, leaving early or avoiding conversation with you, then you may want to rethink the way you approach your job as a business owner.
