Smart HR: Interviewing for the Best Fit

Earlier in the week we discussed how to avoid turnover. We shared insights into your team members' motivation and morale. You might be ready to grow your team, but are you interviewing for the best fit? Read on to find out. hrseriespt1-thumb Bringing on a new employee is one of the most important decisions you will make as a manager or small business owner. How do you ensure you are getting the right fit? Think outside the box & find ways to indirectly gain insight. Once you understand what you are looking for, craft interview questions that provoke narrative answers. One of our favorite ways to do this is by storytelling. Here are a few things to consider when thinking about the best storytelling interview questions: 1. Ask them how they learned from failure. The ability to reflect on and improve from personal  failure underscores our professional aptitude. Their self-reflection provides you insight into the candidate's problem-solving ability and critical thinking skills. 2. Ask about their personal goals. Figure out what makes them tick. Skills, traits, and qualities will be conveyed; you just have to read between the lines. You want to fill your business with self-starters who can take initiative and demonstrate accountability. 3. Ask what their ideal situation looks like. Have them speak from direct experience to assess their fit with your team. This is a great way to have the candidate tell you what they can bring to the table. Allow them  to share their best experience and evaluate the similarities. How is their experience useful to your business? You might find yourself surprised by things you didn't notice about this candidate. 4. Ask them to think on their feet. Instead of having candidates recite their skill sets or speak to other rehearsed qualities, put them on the spot. Ask them about something they are not expecting to be asked. You want to hire someone who can make decisions quickly and take initiative when necessary. Give these kinds of questions a try next time you are bringing someone on board.
