Boost Your “Greenablity” | Eco-Friendly Tips for Small Businesses

Did you know that the average office worker consumers nearly 10,000 sheets of paper each year? That’s equivalent to the amount of paper produced from one tree. You don’t have to be a mathematician to see how quickly that begins to add up. In honor of Earth Day, we want to give you a glimpse at how your small business can help save the environment by making your business more “eco-friendly.” While there are hundreds of ways to improve your small business’ carbon footprint, here are our top five ways to go green in your office. 1. Power down One of the best ways to conserve energy in your office is to power down all electronics and office equipment before leaving each day. When you turn off your computer, don’t forget to unplug the power strip as well. By unplugging the power strip from the wall, you are preventing any energy consumption that occurs even when the computer or electronic device is turned off. Be sure the device is turned off before unplugging the power strip. 2. Turn the lights off OK, we don’t mean for you to work in the dark, but consider utilizing natural light. The use of natural light is particularly effective during summer months when the sun is out for much of the workday. Not only does this help cut down the costs of overhead lighting systems, but the addition of extra windows can help keep the office cool as well. 3. Write it down We realize that some professions require the use of a computer at all times, but how often have you brought your laptop into a meeting or brainstorming session? Instead, try using a notepad and pencil, and shut down your workstation during that time. The hours spent using a pencil and notepad can quickly add up over the course of a year, allowing for lower energy consumption for your business. Around the office here, we can be seen jotting notes on scrap paper from misprints – keeping “pre-loved” paper out of a landfill or recycling bin! 4. Use rechargeable batteries Like many offices today, laptops are more frequently used than desktops. It’s likely your employees are using wireless mice and opting out of the built-in track pad. Unfortunately, this wireless technology comes with a heavy price tag – big-time battery consumption. Instead of constantly replacing your mouse’s battery with a fresh new one, try swapping it out with rechargeable batteries. 5. Telecommute If it is feasible for your small business, then we suggest you encourage your employees to telecommute one day a week. By allowing your employees to work from home, you will reduce the amount of energy consumed in your office and will help cut down on the burning of fossil fuels during commute times.
